The girls played in Midland yesterday and won the Bi-District title! They beat El Paso Bel Air 6-1. Hadley got to play the whole game, even though the senior she had been playing for was off the injured list. Yay! She played defense again and had a very solid game. The girls play again on Friday in Wichita Falls and get to play until we lose or win state!
What’s that old saying?
Tuesday’s game was quite eventful! We played Lubbock Coronado, a team that already had the reputation for playing dirty and having mouthy parents. They were true to form that day. The guy in orange and the woman in the black t-shirt were the Coronado goalkeeper’s parents. She had just been ejected from the game for throwing a ball at one of our players and trying to hit another. Her parents were hot—and mouthing off. The mom called one of our dads a dumb a$$. He casually mentioned that she could come and kiss his dumb a$$. And the rest is history…
While it wasn’t quite as heated as what happened between the dads, I had a few words with the mom myself just after the red card. She was screaming so loudly that I turned to her and said that our player did not kick hers—she pulled back at the last second to avoid a total collision. She yelled a few things at me to which I replied,”Now I see where she gets her temper.” That brought on some more yelling at which I simply shrugged my shoulders and turned around. I’m kind of glad I didn’t say anything else—that could’ve been me on the ground with my shirt pulled up and my crack showing! Ha!
The goalie and her parents were ejected from the stadium by the policeman on duty. Our dad was a little banged up, but mostly just embarrassed.
Other than that, it was a successful day. Our girls won 5-1. That was our last district game and we remain undefeated! Hadley played the whole game again, filling in for a senior out injured. She played defense, which isn’t her favorite, but she had a great game.
Playoffs start next week!
And the last floor is finished!
And it’s the same color as Max! Ha! I put the final floor finish coats on this room late last night after we got in from Hadley’s soccer game in Lubbock. Yippee! Now to put the house back together…
Fisheye
Cool, eh? David got me a fisheye lens for our anniversary! We got a great deal on a used one from a friend. Can’t wait to play with it!
Lucky You!
10 things I learned during this project
2. Girl Scout cookies are for breakfast. Really. Trust me.
3. Bathroom counters make a fine place for coffeepots.
4. Nothing bad will happen if you wear jeans more than one day before washing. (actually, I already knew that. Lance, however, did not! Ha!)
5. Putty knives can double for brownie knives. (learned that from Tyler)
6. Chairs are a wonderful invention—kitchen tables too! (Try doing without them for a few days and you’ll see what I mean!)
7. The morning girl at Sonic is a bit too cheerful.
8. My husband is a BEAST. He can bring home the bacon and fry it up in a pan!. Wait. Maybe that’s not quite right. Anyway, he can do it all! :)
9. When you think “days”, you should really be thinking “weeks”. Or even “months”.
10. Running a floor maintainer requires strength and skill. Neither of which I have. And running it on a day taken off from work definitely does NOT constitute “vacation”.
11. Carpet glue is from the devil.
12. Based on our recent trend of several expensive trips a day, we should invest in stock from Lowe’s.
13. Teens are not as easy-going or flexible as pre-teens. Well, I think I already knew that, too!
14. You can buy WD-40 by the gallon! Who knew?
15. It never ends. Even if you finish one project, there is always something else that needs attention. The joy of owning a home.
16. PMS and remodeling do not go together.
Ok. I know that’s more than ten. It’s been an educational journey.
Almost there!
This is after stain, before sealer. Starting to look like we’ve done something. Finally. It’s funny. Spraying the stain only takes a few minutes for each coat. Why can’t it all be that fast?
Coat #3 for a deeper color. Hopefully, the final coat of stain!
While walking to the back door, I noticed this. Hadley has been using the stairway and basement as a closet and dirty clothes hamper. Resourceful. And messy.
Progress
Can you see why we are all going insane?? And why Hadley thinks we look like a “hoarder family” and might need an intervention?? That was funny the first time she said it. Now, we’re all just irritable and tired of the mess. Ugh. But we are getting very close to finishing all the floors except the gameroom. (The gameroom will be last)
For a week or so, we’ve been living in the gameroom, our bedroom and bathroom. All other rooms are off-limits. The gameroom is PACKED. Everything that wouldn’t fit in the garage is in there. And it is overflowing! In order to get to the garage, you have to squeeze between Lance’s bed and the chairs. It’s about a foot wide. To get to our room is about the same. It’s been a long few weeks of stepping over, around and on things just to get from place to place.
Lance’s room is all but done. It looks pretty different from the last picture I posted of it! Overall, I’m happy. We made a few mistakes and the concrete didn’t cooperate in a few places, but I’ve decided I need to choose perfection or my sanity. I guess I need my sanity more. All the rooms will need a final floor finish that we’ll have to redo about every 4-6 months. I haven’t done that in Lance’s room, but I’ll do that when I can do the hall, entry, living room, dining room, kitchen and laundry room. I *hope* to be able to do that on Thursday night or Friday morning! Then we have to wait 24 hours before we can move furniture back in. David sprayed the second coat of stain on those areas last night. I’ll be mopping soon to see if a third coat is needed or if I can start the sealer. Whoop! More pics to come!
Adoring Fans and Girl Scout Cookies
Seen at the soccer game today….
Guess what? Lance likes Caramel Delites! He bought some at the game today and nearly finished the box before it was over. Guess what we did on the way home? Yep---we stopped at Lowe’s where we’d seen Girl Scouts set up and we bought 5 boxes! Yay for extra calories!
Things have been crazy around here! The floor project is just about to get the best of us. Dad was here last week and saw how stressed we were and graciously offered to come back to help. He worked hard for 3 days---what a wonderful thing! Thanks, Dad! ♥ We still have a lot to do, but some of the pressure has been lifted. One of the other parents helping us with the soccer team dinner next week offered to have it at his house. I told him today that we probably needed to plan on that. I hate that we won’t be finished in time, but I don’t think that deadline is even possible at this point. We’ll be ready for next year, though. Ha!
Lance’s room is almost finished. We have one last coat of floor finisher to apply. It’s not perfect, but I still like it. I think we will really enjoy it once it’s done. The other rooms are in various stages of completion—none of them quite ready for stain. I’ll try to share some pictures soon. If any of you are considering staining your concrete—don’t! LOL My hope is that it will be like having a baby. When you are in the midst of labor, you think you will NEVER do that again. Never. Ever. But once you see that precious baby, you forget all the blood, sweat and tears. I’m hoping the floors will have the same effect. Time will tell!
Slow, but steady and very messy!
Progress continues, albeit a bit slowly! The popcorn texture is GONE from Lance’s ceiling and in its place is a pretty decent knock-down texture almost dry enough to paint! David sprayed the ceiling last night and I think it turned out ok. (I told him it was surely better than our bathroom ceiling-ha! That project didn’t turn out all that well!) I’d love to do this in every room where we have popcorn texture, but I think it’ll have to wait. We have a couple of deadlines looming…
And,I was actually thankful to receive one of those annoying phone calls from a charity this week. They will have a truck on our street today—do I have anything to donate? Why, yes—yes I do! Check that off the list!
I hope to get the walls and ceiling of Lance’s room painted today—if not finished, at least the first coat! That blue paint that was under the border may take some work to cover up. Lance chose a neutral tan for the walls. I tried to think of something awesome to do on the ceiling, but for now I guess it will just be white.
We decided to do the painting first and use the existing carpet as our drop-cloth. That way, we don’t have to worry about getting paint on the concrete. After we finish the walls, we plan to touch up the baseboards. Then we will rip out the carpet and try our hand at staining concrete. Busy weekend!
A few soccer shots
Here is a peek at the season so far. She’s having fun on varsity, but isn’t getting the play time she got on JV. That was expected, though. Gotta pay your dues! District play began last weekend, so now it really counts…
Hey! Check out those fans!
Super Sunday
The projects are coming along. David was having trouble with the linoleum that remained under the tile in the kitchen so he rented a tool that attached to his air compressor to finish the job. It worked pretty well and the old flooring is just about gone! BUT, the house is covered in a white, gritty dust. Ugh. It’s going to be a long few days/weeks. We’ve tried to keep the dust out of bedrooms by keeping doors closed but it’s not 100% effective. So far, Lance hasn’t been bothered by it any more than the rest of us. Next up---carpet removal!
Lance’s room is just about empty now. We need to take apart his bed, then it will be ready to start on his floor! We decided his floor would be a good learning point. He doesn’t want the same color we’ll stain the rest of the concrete, but the principles are the same. Then, we’ll paint, etc. and hope it looks more grown up! We tried to go through all of his stuff as we moved him into Tyler’s old room so that’s added to the work (and the mess!!). It’s pretty amazing how much he had packed into that little room. I’ve got piles of stuff everywhere---some to donate, some to sell at the children’s resale shop. Anyone want a twin over twin bunk bed frame?? :)
Grandma’s 90th birthday weekend!!
What a great weekend! Lots of the family gathered in Edmond, OK to celebrate Grandma’s 90 amazing years! All of her children were able to be there, along with a few grandchildren and great-grandchildren. There was a lot of laughing, hugging and storytelling. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate this incredible woman! Here she is with her five kids. Love you all! ♥
The whole gang. Aren’t we a handsome bunch? We took this right after we’d all been to church with Grandma, where they mentioned her birthday quite often from the pulpit much to her chagrin. Hehe! I didn’t get the camera set up fast enough to catch us all in our nice clothes. (And I was one of the first to change!)
Is it me or does Grandma look EXACTLY like Grandma Happy here??? (Minus the Dr. Pepper, of course. I don’t remember Grandma Happy being a Pepper!)
